Abstract:

In the paper, I will explore the notion of face according to Emmanuel Lévinas, from its Hebrew source (panim – ???????), contrasting it with the Greek notion of mask and the Medieval notion of haecceitas , that is, as the last form, what radically distinguishes each individual. This way, the notion of face best describes the richness of the person than the notion of substance.

Having face means ‘being for someone’, ‘being before someone’. The other’s face is presented as a calling, as an imperative to be non-indifferent to the other’s hunger, loneliness and suffering. The face of the other promotes my identity as responsible, starts giving me freedom and ethical entity.
